(West Des Moines, IA) – The City of West Des Moines has cut the ribbon on nearly $ 60 million, 300,000 square feet MidAmerican Energy Rec Plex at 65-cent Grand Avenue.
The establishment has a wide range of indoor and outdoor spaces for recreation and sports.
There are two ice rinks. The main ice rink can accommodate up to 2,400 people. It also transforms into a 20,000 square foot convention space during the off season. The second ice rink can accommodate up to 300 spectators. The facility also has a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports venues, including basketball, volleyball, and pickelball. There are also batting cages and spaces that can be used for practices, birthday parties or kids’ camps. The Rec Plex also has an indoor turf field and space for soccer.
There are three large outdoor synthetic turf pitches, with night lighting.
The Rec Plex also has an Esports center and community and activity rooms.
The total project cost $ 59 million. Most of the funds come from city bonds, tax revenues from hotels and motels, and corporate and personal donations. Funding also came from loans, local option sales tax revenue, tax increase funding, state and local grants.
