Overview of the region: nearly 2,000 hotels are expected to be operational in Europe

Prague, like many other European capitals, has many hotel projects lined up.

According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, 1,955 hotel projects are under development across Europe, with the UK and Germany proving particularly active.

Some 1,955 hotels with a total of 327,942 rooms are under construction across Europe, our researchers found. We take a closer look at the region’s top growth markets and select a few new properties to watch out for.

Hotel openings in Europe per year

We have seen that 2021 is expected to be a busy year for the European hotel market with 639 planned openings, which will involve a total of 96,482 rooms. This high number may be due to the fact that many projects originally designed for launch in 2020 were delayed when Covid19 first launched and are nearing completion.

In 2022, another 425 properties with 71,779 rooms are expected to open. Another 254 hotels with 45,243 keys will follow in 2023, while 637 projects with 114,438 rooms are planned for 2024 and beyond.

Of the 1,955 new European hotels, more than two-thirds (1,396 properties) will be in the four-star sector. The remaining third (559 hotels) target the five-star luxury category.

Main hotel markets in Europe

The UK is taking the lead country by country, with 488 projects and 70,531 rooms lined up. London alone will see nearly a quarter of these openings; the city is expected to secure 114 additional hotels with 20,017 keys, making it Europe’s leading urban hotel market ahead of the Irish capital Dublin, which has 60 hotels and 9,313 rooms on its development slate.

Germany ranks second among national growth markets with 369 ongoing projects and 58,036 rooms, followed by France where 127 properties will bring 20,370 additional keys. 36 of these establishments will be launched in Paris, adding 7,290 rooms to the city’s offering and making it the third most dynamic urban hotel market in the region.

Italy will receive 98 new properties with 13,874 rooms, while 90 projects with 17,092 rooms have been reserved for Spain.

Major hotel brands are expanding in Europe

Hampton by Hilton tops our list of Europe’s Most Active Brands, as it plans to open 49 hotels with 7,963 rooms.

This places it well ahead of Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Garden Inn. The former intends to expand to 24 properties and 4,569 rooms, while the latter hopes to deliver 24 programs and 3,814 keys.

Beware of the following European hotel projects

From the start of 2024, the Hard Rock Hotel Letná Prague will bring the iconic energy of the Hard Rock brand to the Czech capital. This 523-room hotel will offer splendid views of Letná Park and Prague Castle from the stylish Sky Bar, and there will also be specialty restaurants and a café. In addition, the walls of many of its public spaces will be adorned with treasured musical memorabilia from the world’s best artists, as is customary in Hard Rock hotels.

In London’s Strand East district, a 350-room hotel will be part of a new urban development slated for completion in early 2023; for now, we call the scheme Hotelproject London Strand East. When completed, the huge car-free space will also include 1,200 housing units, as well as offices, schools, shops, water taxi service, a floating cocktail bar and mooring lines available to residents.

In Scandinavia, meanwhile, Lapland Hotels Tampere Arena will open towards the end of this year. Located next to Finland’s largest multi-purpose arena, the hotel will offer 273 high-quality rooms, a 350-seat restaurant, bar and a small store stocked with essentials.
