Airbnb Now Lets You Search For Homes With EV Chargers

In a summer update to the Airbnb rental accommodation market, customers can now search for accommodation that includes an EV charger in their stay. Airbnb added the research after years of electric vehicle drivers asking for the option.

Airbnb is an American company that provides people with easy access to a global rental housing market, including shared spaces, vacation rentals, and even local tourism activities.

Since its inception in 2008, the platform has become a staple for many travelers who want to stay in more comfortable spaces than in hotel rooms.

While electric vehicle charging hasn’t been Airbnb’s primary focus, it’s no stranger to the industry. In 2015, the company announced a partnership with Tesla to install wall chargers in the homes of some hosts.

A year later, Airbnb took a similar approach for EV chargers, but with solar panels instead, by partnering with SolarCity.

Beyond 2018, there have been dozens of posts in the Airbnb community forums asking why an EV charger isn’t yet a searchable filter on the platform. The hosting app has finally listened and added electric vehicle chargers to ease the process of finding electric vehicle drivers.

Airbnb introduces the EV charger as a search filter for your stay

Last May, Airbnb released a YouTube video featuring CEO Brian Chesky who featured over 100 news updates on his platform. This included flexible matching, easier host descriptions, and new EV charger convenience.

Electric vehicle drivers on the move, rejoice! Now you can more easily find a trip that suits you and your electric vehicle.

Here’s how to find an Airbnb with an EV charger

  1. Visit the Airbnb website or open the app on your smartphone.

You will need to create an account and log in in order to reserve the accommodation that suits you and your electric vehicle for your stay.

  2. Enter your search criteria.

This includes location, dates of stay and number of guests.
After your search, you will see an initial list of possible matches for your given dates.

  3. From there, you can further refine your search.

This includes options presented in the toolbar such as ‘cancellation flexibility’, ‘type of location’, ‘instant booking’, etc.

  4. Tap or click “More filters”.

From there, you can select a number of additional filters to find the exact accommodations and amenities you’re looking for. This includes options such as number of beds or bathrooms, whether the owner is a ‘Superhost’ or whether the place has air conditioning.

  5. Scroll down to the “Installations” section, and then tap or click “Show all installations”.

From there, you’ll see the EV charger as a checkbox to filter your search.

  6. Check the “EV charger” box

Boom! See what kind of options appear.

Unfortunately, it’s as granular as the EV filter gets on the current Airbnb platform, so from your research you won’t know what type of EV charger is present on the property.

That being said, you can select a property with a charger that looks promising and see if the host indicates what type of charger it is in their description or if they have provided photos of it in the Airbnb gallery.

In the worst case, you can contact the host directly through Airbnb and see what kind of EV charger they have.
