Accommodation establishments in Estonia received 420,000 tourists in August

Estonian accommodation establishments received around 420,000 tourists in August this year, which means that there was a total increase of 23% compared to the figures for the same period last year.

According to figures provided by Statistics Estonia, the number of international tourists jumped while the number of domestic tourists marked a decline, reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.

In this regard, Statistics Estonia analyst Helga Laurmaa pointed out that around 189,000 international tourists, as well as 231,000 domestic tourists, are accommodated in this Baltic state.

“There were 94% more foreign tourists than in August 2021. However, the number of foreign tourists was still 34% lower than in August 2019 before the pandemic. The number of domestic tourists has increased rapidly in recent years, but in August 2022, the number of domestic tourists was 6% lower than in August of last year, although it was 15% higher than that of August. August 2019 before the crisis”, Laurmaa remarked.

Figures provided by the same source revealed that there was an increase in the number of tourists from European countries as well as those from countries outside Europe, compared to August 2021 figures.

Citizens of the following territories accounted for the highest number of tourists who visited Estonia in August this year:

  • Finland (36% of all foreign tourists)
  • Latvia (13% of foreign tourists)

The figures reveal that the number of visitors from these countries to Estonia was more precisely 223% and 62% higher than the August figures. However, despite this increase, the number of Finnish tourists did not exceed pre-pandemic levels, while the number of Latvian tourists increased by 9% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The latest Statistics Estonia report revealed that a total of 67% of international tourists were staying in Harju County, followed by:

  • Parnu (13%)
  • Tartu (6%)
  • County of Saare (5%)

The same source reveals that international tourists spent a total of 370,000 nights in Estonia.

“For 74% of domestic tourists, the purpose of their trip was vacation and 19% were on a business trip. The largest share of domestic tourists (21%) was accommodated in Harju county, 17% in Pärnu county and 9% each in Ida-Viru, Saare and Tartu counties. Domestic tourists spent a total of 406,000 nights in accommodation establishments,” reads the statement published by Statistic Estonia.

At the same time, figures provided by the Estonian government agency also revealed that in August this year, a total of 1,223 accommodation establishments served visitors, which means the figures are up by 11. % compared to July figures.

A total of 24,000 rooms, as well as 56,000 bed places, were available for customers. At the same time, the room occupancy rate was 55%, while the average cost of an overnight stay was 42 euros in total per person, one euro less than in July.
